You connect with the server, not WordPress with FTP. Once you have logged in, you can edit any and all files on the server that are in your root directory.

There are two ways… go to your themes manager, enter in the search field for themes by using keywords such as the colors you want etc. then it will open up the themes area at wordpress and when you find one you like, it will give you a link to ‘install theme’.
Presto you are done.
If you wanted another theme like thesis or something, then you gotta ftp. But thesis is more than just a theme.. so I dont think that applies to you.

If you can login to your dashboard of your wodrpress blog, it should be done by following:
1. Login to your admin page.
2. Appearance/Themes/manage themes/Add new/upload
3. Browse your theme which has to be in .zip format
4. Follow the instruction, it should work fine.
Answer #4
Themes can be installed easily from within the admin, e.g. http://www.yourblog.com/wp-admin.
Also, FTP is an excellent way to install a theme. Log into your domain. In the public html folder is all of your wordpress files and folders. In the content folder is the themes folder. Open the themes folder and simple place your theme (unzipped) in. When you log into your WordPress admin panel, you will see the theme and simply activate it

If you are on wordpress dot com you are limited by what you can do, in a lot of ways.
You apparently are discovering that using a free webhost costs you time and gives frustration.
Start up a blog with a hosting company like Hostgator. They use FANTASTICO which can help you set up a blog in about 3 minutes.
You’ll be able to use ftp, any plug in you want, and totally customize your theme etc.
Yes, it will cost about $7 a month, but it’s well worth it.
Have a great day!
